Frontstage Magazine: What creative and musical influences inspired you during the creation of your new album „Death Melodies“?
Moose: Just being together and jamming out ideas gets the ball rolling with our song writing, we don’t try and be or sound like any other bands we just be ourselves and what comes out is KTL. We still love all our own influences so maybe they will come out in their own unique way, so mix us all up when we write and songs flow out and kinda write themselves.
Frontstage Magazine: How would you describe the artistic and sonic progression between your debut album „The Sinner“ and your new work „Death Melodies“?
Moose: The Sinner was a fun album to make, it was mainly written by Jordan, James and myself so we had fun making that record. With Death Melodies we had the added bonus of a full band writing together and more ideas coming in off Travis and some great heavy vocals added by Jay.
Frontstage Magazine: What themes and emotions did you want to express on „Death Melodies,“ and how did you translate them into your music and lyrics?
Moose: Musically we always write for ourselves and just play in the strengths of each individual and push them to sound like themselves, lyrics we leave mainly to James. The songs cover issues with Anxiety, Addiction and depression, we also hope that people who are going through these can relate and understand and hopefully realize they are not alone.
Frontstage Magazine: What was the creative process behind the production of the album, especially considering the challenges brought by the global COVID-19 pandemic?
Moose: We started writing in January 2019 just before the pandemic hit, we quickly realised that we’re not going to be able to tour The Sinner so started to write via file sharing. Thankfully Canada opened up its borders to vaccinated UK-US citizens so we booked a house and headed there for 2 weeks and wrote 75% of the album.
Frontstage Magazine: You have an impressive band history with members hailing from different parts of the world and having played in other well-known bands. How has this diversity influenced your approach to Kill The Lights‘ music, particularly on „Death Melodies“?
Moose: Being in the bands previous to KTL has definitely helped us being able to continue to write and perform the music we love, we all put our own signature style into these songs so when you hear the songs hopefully you’ll know who’s playing in the band and enjoy the music.
