Frontstage Magazine: Thomas, what inspired you the most to record your upcoming 7th studio album, and how do you think it will differ from your previous albums?
Thomas Nicholas: I released 9 singles during lockdown and thought about compiling them into an album. However, when the last single caught the attention of Ace Enders from the Early November, we got together to write a song that will be included in this forthcoming album. From there I met the folks at SBÄM and finally got into studio with Taylor Carroll. Taylor and I have been creating some awesome songs. A lot of people are saying that it’s some of my best.
Frontstage Magazine: With an impressive list of producers and artists you’ve collaborated with, how has this collaboration influenced the sound and creative direction of your new album?
Thomas Nicholas: First of all, Taylor Carroll is so talented as a producer and engineer. He can play any instrument, sing anything but the best part is that he is such a positive person. I think our combined positivity is inherent on each of the songs we are creating for this album. Not to mention the collaborations with Ayron Jones, The Early November, Bowling for Soup and more …
Frontstage Magazine: What message or themes do you aim to convey with the original songs on your new album, and how do they reflect in your music?
Thomas Nicholas: This paticular collection of songs have a lot of reflection on my youth, my experiences and my self awareness of my own failures. On the surface there’s tons of hooks and feel good moments, but if you want to you can dive deep into the lyrics and find moments that where we can all relate.
Frontstage Magazine: With over 1000 live performances in various countries, you’ve undoubtedly gathered rich stage experience. How has this live experience influenced your approach to songwriting and recording this album?
Thomas Nicholas: I’ve made the adjustment to create songs in the studio that I can perform live night after night while touring. I also tend to write songs that I will want to perform live.
Frontstage Magazine: As a solo artist, you’ve played a wide range of events, from major festivals to intimate club shows. How has this diversity in live experiences influenced your musical development and understanding of the audience?
Thomas Nicholas: I’ve learned to always make an effort to connect with the people that come to my shows. It’s certainly easier at an acoustic performance but connection is the main focus. I think that’s the thing that we all want and I do my best to achieve that.
Frontstage Magazine: As a well-known artist for your versatility both as an actor and a musician, how do you find the balance between these two creative expressions, particularly in producing a new album while fulfilling other artistic commitments?
Thomas Nicholas: I do my best to focus 100% on what I’m doing in the moment. Whether it’s songwriting for my 7th album, or producing and acting in my new TV series UnderDeveloped or cooking dinner. Each requires my complete attention while I’m in the process, in order for me to make it the best I can possible create.
Frontstage Magazine: Your upcoming American Pie Emo Night Tour – Songs and Stories 2024 takes you through various cities in Germany, from Leipzig to Frankfurt. What can fans expect from this tour, and how will you present the blend of music, stories, and nostalgia in each of these shows?
Thomas Nicholas: I will be performing lot of songs from my Frat Party album – which is a compilation of my favorite songs from the American Pie soundtrack albums. I have reasons I chose each of them and stories to tell related to them. And and any of my original songs also have stories that relate back to those films. I am very grateful for the success of those films and I aim to celebrate that on this upcoming tour in Germany. Plus, I’m half German so I’m very excited to tour in a place that feels like home. It’s been about 13 years since my last tour there, so this is like a reunion for me.
