Frontstage Magazine: How did your collaboration with Norma Jean Martine on „Die For Me“ differ from your previous creative partnerships or solo works?
Jonasu: Hey Frontstage Magazine, thanks for the interview and your questions 🙂 Norma and I have been writing songs together over the last couple of years. Norma is incredibly talented, and I love her voice, so there was always the idea to release something together. Sometimes it just takes time to find the right song that fits both artists, and we are both very picky hehe so it took a while but therefore we are very proud of our little baby!
Frontstage Magazine: You mentioned that you integrated various stylistic elements from trance, techno, and electronica into „Die For Me“. How did you come up with this sonic fusion, and what was your inspiration behind it?
Jonasu: Yes indeed, ‘Die For Me’ mixes so many different elements of different styles of dance and pop as well. The song was written beginning of 2023 and around that time uptempo dance songs became more popular (again). So I was playing around with typical 90’s inspired sounds (like the M1 Piano) merging them with more dark-sounding pop elements from artists like The Weeknd. So basically, I was just trying out many different things until I had elements that I thought worked really well together!
Frontstage Magazine: „Die For Me“ is described as an electronic odyssey that reflects the extraordinary collaboration between you and Norma Jean Martine. How did you manage to unite your artistic visions to create this musical spectacle?
Jonasu: Like I mentioned before, it just took time to find the right song to unite our artistic visions. Norma has a very dramatic melancholic voice, and I really wanted her to shine with that. I felt ‘Die For Me’ had the perfect vibe and the moment she sang the chorus, I knew we had something special!
Frontstage Magazine: How did the visual aesthetics of the film „Interstellar“ influence your musical creativity, and how did you attempt to capture this epic atmosphere in the sound of „Die For Me“?
Jonasu: Haha yeah, I started the instrumental of the song, and its working title was ‘Interstellar’. It was the synth pattern with that percussive deep bass hitting. The impact just felt like the galaxy, very deep, mysterious and made me think of the visual aesthetics of ‘Interstellar’. I wanted the song to feel as epic as the movie, so deep bass and warm thick synthesizers always take me back to the early days of science fiction.
Frontstage Magazine: „Die For Me“ is not only musically powerful but also emotionally profound. What personal experiences or emotions did you infuse into the song, and how did you manage to integrate them into the lyrics and melody?
Jonasu: Yes, I think there are many emotions in this song based on real-life experiences of all co-writers, not only me. I think we all been in the situation in a relationship when love seems to fade, and you doubt whether your connection is strong enough to make it through difficult times. Lying to yourself and each other can become easy if you’re trying to not get hurt or hurt each other. So the call is, let’s be honest with each other, is our love strong enough?
