Frontstage Magazine: Your upcoming self-titled album marks an important new chapter for Sports. What personal or creative journey led you to this point in your career?
CALE: I think just following the excitement. Having our own studio space was always a dream of ours, so we let that be the engine this time. To shake it up, to keep going.
Frontstage Magazine: This is your first fully self-produced record. How did having complete creative freedom influence your sound, your workflow, and the dynamic between you as a duo?
CALE: For me, I just got to waste a lot of time. Which can be a bad thing, but when you are at someone else’s studio you are trying not to waste time. But I have to go in circles sometimes as a writer, as a singer. And I just had an infinite track to go around this time. It helped me find the edges of where I wanted to go.. and then still have time to come back if I wanted to.
Frontstage Magazine: What themes or emotions form the backbone of this album? Is there a particular feeling or message you hope listeners will take away from it as a whole?
CALE: I hope people take something away from it, but it’ll never ever be what I want them to take away from it. I think it’s really cool that people will have their own interpretations and it’ll color their lives in a different way than it does mine.
Frontstage Magazine: You’ve been friends since school and have spent years creating music together. How does your personal relationship—its growth, challenges, and shared history—manifest itself on this new album?
CALE: Since it was just me and Christian this time, we had to figure out what our process together actually looks like. I think our friendship made that part easier to figure out than if we had just met. We know each other. We don’t want to inhibit each other. We both want each other to feel happy and fulfilled making the album.
Frontstage Magazine: With an international tour ahead, did the idea of performing these songs live influence how you approached writing or producing the album?
CALE: No, it’s usually the other way around. I think the idea of how we’d perform it started to take come once the album was taking shape. We started to realize this album was a little more electronic than our others, and maybe we could embrace that live and rework everything to fit alongside the new stuff.
