Frontstage Magazine: “Burnout Days” has been out for a little while now — looking back, how do you reflect on the process of creating it, and how does it feel to finally have it out in the world?
Flipturn: It’s such a fulfilling experience getting to put songs out into the world that you’ve poured so much into. I look back on both the writing and the recording process fondly. We wrote the album in the mountains of Asheville, North Carolina surrounded by lush green trees, and we recorded in the desert of Texas on a pecan tree farm. I feel lucky that we were able to create these songs in such beautiful places!
Frontstage Magazine: The record feels more emotionally open and sonically diverse than your previous work. What experiences or personal growth shaped this phase for you as musicians and individuals?
Flipturn: We are constantly trying to grow as individuals and as musicians. This record was the product of us trying to challenge ourselves and each other to push our sound to unexplored areas. I know we never wanna make the same album twice, so each new project we work on will always have something a little different than the last.
Frontstage Magazine: Your upcoming European tour kicks off in November, with stops in Berlin and Cologne. How excited are you to bring your music back to fans here in Germany?
Flipturn: Soooo excited!! We had such a lovely time in Germany and had some of our favorite shows of the run there! The energy was electric, and I just know that these upcoming shows will be even better. I also can’t wait for the food!
Frontstage Magazine: You’re known for your atmospheric and emotionally charged live performances. How do you plan to translate the feeling and depth of “Burnout Days” to the stage?
Flipturn: Since its release, we’ve been able to tour the album heavily, so at this point the songs feel very comfortable to us. We always try to amp (pun intended) up the songs for live performances, whether that is by different instrumentation, making the songs slightly faster, creating new arrangements and stuff like that. It’s always really fun to see how recorded songs turn out live.
Frontstage Magazine: The songs on the album sound deeply personal and reflective. Is there a specific theme or moment that feels especially meaningful to you when you think about this record?
Flipturn: A moment on the album that feels most meaningful every time I hear it is the opening to our song “Window.” It sits in the middle of the album and every time I hear the ambient sounds we put at the beginning of the song, I am taken back to the two locations where we wrote most of the record — one being an Airbnb in the mountains of North Carolina and the other the sunroom of our house in Jacksonville that we all lived in together. Both locations were very in nature and had a sense of calmness to them. Every time I hear that song, I start to miss the days we spent writing this record.
Frontstage Magazine: You’ve gone from college house shows to international tours in just a few years. What do you take away from that journey, and what are your hopes and expectations for this upcoming headlining run across Europe?
Flipturn: Over the years of touring and playing shows to varying crowds, we’ve learned the importance of putting on an engaging show. Whether it’s a sweaty college house show or a music festival, we make our best effort to have it be the best show yet and an incredible experience for our crowd. We had such a blast last time we played across Europe, and we can’t wait to do it again!
