Frontstage Magazine: Your music thrives on emotional honesty and vulnerability. How do you manage to bring these intense feelings to life on stage every night during the “Symphony of Doubts” Tour?
Jonathan Roy: I don’t always get it right, but I try my best. We play a lot of shows, and some days I’m dealing with my own emotions, like anyone else. When I’m onstage I try to stay present and remember what each song meant to me. Sometimes I’ll tap into old memories for a moment just to feel what inspired the song. Other times, I don’t go there. I just focus on delivering the best performance I can so people feel the honesty of how I’m feeling today. And what I’ve realized is that the emotion and vulnerability I reach onstage often come from the fans. The more love and energy they give me, the more I give back
Frontstage Magazine: “Symphony of Doubts” explores the idea of embracing your inner uncertainties. Which personal experiences influenced you the most in making this theme the heart of your new album?
Jonathan Roy: I’ve got too many to count, to be honest. But the one that affects me the most is the doubt I sometimes have in myself, in my creativity, my talent, my voice, my writing, my musicianship. There are moments where I feel like I’m not enough. That doubt used to really frustrate me, but I’m learning to accept who I am and the artist I am. That’s what makes my art mine. It’s a beautiful process, and one I feel I’ll eventually make peace with.
Frontstage Magazine: You’ve reached millions of listeners worldwide. What does it mean to you to present these songs in a more intimate setting during your exclusive shows in Germany?
Jonathan Roy:When I was starting out, my dream was to play all over the world. It didn’t matter how many people were in the room, I just wanted to share my music, travel with my art and connect with people wherever I went. I wanted to make life a little better in the way I could. Now I’m able to fly across oceans and play for thousands of people around the world and I’m just incredibly grateful for that.
Frontstage Magazine: Your live performances are known for being raw, powerful, and almost therapeutic. What emotional moments stand out to you during a concert, and what do you take away from each night?
Jonathan Roy: First of all, thank you. I really appreciate the kind words. I’m glad people feel the music is raw, powerful, and therapeutic. That tells me I’m doing something right. What I find most beautiful is seeing people’s eyes and emotions when they sing with me. In some places, people don’t speak a word of English, yet they know every lyric. That means the world to me. If they took the time to learn those words, it’s because the songs meant something to them. So when I see people sing, cry, or laugh to those lyrics, that’s the most incredible thing I get to experience every night.
Frontstage Magazine: Portair joins you as the support act, and his atmospheric songwriting pairs beautifully with your sound. How important is the emotional connection and shared atmosphere between you, your support, and the audience?
Jonathan Roy: Like I said, the emotional connection is what matters most to me, that’s why we do this. And I love Portair. He’s an incredible human, and the band and I are really happy to have him back. He truly feels like part of our family. I’m also proud of the risks he’s taken over the past few years. He deserves to be heard and seen around the world. Having an opener who shares our values and sets the tone for a beautiful night is so important, and Portair always brings people to that place. We’re grateful to have him with us
Frontstage Magazine: Songs like “Keeping Me Alive” and “Lost” have brought you international success. How has this global recognition shaped your perspective on yourself and your artistry — and where do you see your path leading after this tour?
Jonathan Roy: These are songs I know I’ll be playing for the rest of my life and that feels special. Their meaning will shift over time for me and for the fans and I love that. After this tour, I’m hoping to take a little time off, reconnect with myself and my wife and hopefully start a family. It’s a new chapter I’m nervous about but really excited for. I’ll keep writing too! I’m already working on a new album and once that’s done, I’ll be back on the road doing what I love. At 36, I know this is my path. I just hope it keeps growing, more people discover the music and that I keep bringing something meaningful into the world.
